Statement by Congressman Rob Menendez on Election of Speaker Johnson

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After the election of Speaker Mike Johnson, Congressman Rob Menendez released the following statement:

“Congress has been completely dysfunctional as the House Republicans’ infighting and chaos prevented action on the many issues facing our country and our world, especially during the past 21 days without a Speaker of the House. 

“Now, House Republicans have selected a radical conservative Speaker with a disturbing record, including deep involvement in efforts to overturn President Biden’s election, support for banning abortion nationwide, climate change denial, and opposition to LGBTQ+ equality.

“Nonetheless, it is my hope that Speaker Johnson learns from the disorder under the past 10 months of Republican leadership and forges a new bipartisan path forward to fund our government, support Israel in its fight against Hamas, and continue our aid for Ukraine. I urge him to move beyond House Republicans’ partisanship to work with House Democrats and put people over politics.”
