The Department of Homeland Security has proposed converting an industrial warehouse in Roxbury Township into a new U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility. This proposal is part of a broader effort to detain up to 80,000 people in converted warehouses across the country. ICE acting director Todd Lyons recently said his goal is for ICE to operate "like Amazon Prime, but with human beings."
From Minnesota to New Jersey, we've seen what happens when ICE comes into our
communities, from taking a 5-year-old child into detention to killing American citizens in broad daylight.
Since President Trump took office, large federal detention contracts with privately-run prisons have resulted in unsafe and unsanitary conditions, unrest, and even deaths of those detained by ICE in New Jersey. Rather than learning from these failures, DHS wants to escalate the harm being inflicted upon our communities by detaining people - potentially from across the state - in a warehouse designed for storage, not human safety.
This isn't what our country stands for, and that's why we're taking action. We cannot look away or be silent in this moment.
New Jersey is home to more than two million immigrants who are essential to our communities and our economy. The construction of this facility would cause profound harm not only to our immigrant friends and neighbors, but to the fabric of our state.
