Menendez Statement on the U.S. Military Operation in Iran

June 22, 2025

"Iran, the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism, poses an extreme threat to the security of the Middle East and the United States. This threat becomes exponentially greater if Iran obtains a nuclear weapon. If that can be prevented, we enhance the potential for greater regional stability and a lasting peace.

"I’m grateful for our brave service members and their safe return from last night’s military operation, and I remain deeply concerned for the 40,000 troops in the region. Their safety, and that of all Americans, is paramount.

"That is one of many reasons why military engagement is the most consequential decision an individual or body can make. In recognition of the gravity of these decisions, the War Powers Resolution of 1973 was passed to, 'insure that the collective judgment of both the Congress and the President will apply to the introduction of United States Armed Forces into hostilities.'

"When followed, this law can give American families confidence that the military engagements entered into on their behalf are strategic, appropriate, and in the public interest. That’s why I am deeply concerned President Trump took this action without authorization from Congress - something the Administration will have to address directly with Members of Congress in a classified briefing.

"I return to Washington this week and intend to receive that briefing and conduct oversight of the Administration’s actions. I will demand that the President follow the law regarding Congress’ role in any next steps and advocate for diplomacy to both prevent escalation of the current conflict and ensure Iran does not acquire a nuclear weapon."
