Menendez Joins Katz Family to Celebrate Opening of New SaveStation in Jersey City

June 17, 2025

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Yesterday, Congressman Rob Menendez (NJ-08) joined Jill, Michael, and Dana Katz, as well as local advocates to unveil a SaveStation in the Newport neighborhood of Jersey City. Provided by the Katz Family in memory of their daughter, Sarah, the SaveStation provides the public with access to an automated external defibrillator, which can be used to provide life-saving care during a cardiac emergency.

Sarah Katz suffered a sudden cardiac arrest in 2022 after consuming a highly caffeinated beverage. This SaveStation is one of many that the Katz family will place at each school Sarah attended, turning their grief into action and raising awareness about emergency preparedness.

“I was proud to stand with the Katz family as they honor the life of their beloved daughter and sister, Sarah, by working to save lives throughout our community,” said Congressman Rob Menendez. “From supporting access to life-saving equipment to introducing legislation for stronger caffeine labeling, I remain committed to protecting public health and working with advocates like the Katz family to prevent tragedies like this from happening in the future.”

“We are so proud and deeply grateful to LeFrak, Stevens Cooperative School, ZOLL, SaveStation, and the American Heart Association for coming together to place this critical, life-saving resource right here in Newport—just outside the school that Sarah loved so dearly. We also want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Congressman Rob Menendez and Assemblywoman Barbara Stamato for their support and advocacy in making this vision a reality and championing the Sarah Katz Caffeine Safety Act which helps protect the health and safety of all consumers,” said Jill, Michael, and Dana Katz. “Sarah lived her life making a difference in her many communities, always committed to promoting health, equity, and connection. In her graduation speech at Stevens Cooperative School, she reminded us that we each have 1,440 minutes every day to make a positive impact. This SaveStation AED does just that. It stands as a symbol of Sarah’s enduring legacy—protecting lives, strengthening our community, and continuing the impact she so passionately believed in.”

Menendez recently reintroduced the Sarah Katz Caffeine Safety Act, legislation that would require clear labeling of caffeine content in food and beverages so people can make safer, more informed choices.
