Rep. Rob Menendez Statement on Reopening of Delaney Hall ICE Detention Facility
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Rob Menendez (NJ-08) issued the following statement in response to the announcement by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”) that they plan to immediately reopen the Delaney Hall private immigration detention facility in Newark, New Jersey:
“The operation of any private immigration detention facility runs counter to the values of our district, our state, and our country, full stop.
“Since the beginning of Trump’s term, we've been sounding the alarm on the harmful effects of this Administration’s policies, conducting oversight at the Elizabeth Detention Center and demanding answers from ICE as to their expansion plans within New Jersey. Today’s announcement of the reopening of Delaney Hall is a step in the wrong direction. These expansion efforts will not make our country safer – they are simply an extension of the President’s inhumane crusade against hard-working immigrant families.
“Our commitment to the wellbeing of our constituents is unwavering, and we will explore every avenue possible to defend against these cruel and unnecessary attacks, both through rigorous oversight and legal action if necessary.”
