Rep. Rob Menendez Announces More Than $6 Million in Grant Funding for NY Waterway Ferry Facility
WEEHAWKEN, N.J. - Today, Congressman Rob Menendez (NJ-08) announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded a $6.32 million grant to NJ Transit to install new equipment at the NY Waterway Weehawken Ferry Maintenance Facility.
The grant, funded under the FY 2024 Passenger Ferry Grant Program, will be used to install a wave attenuator at the facility, preventing waves, high tides, and floods from harming vessels and impacting service for customers.
“This grant will ensure that our transit system is more resilient, reliable, and fulfilling the needs of New Jerseyans and people throughout the region,” said Congressman Rob Menendez. “NJ Transit and NY Waterway play a critical role in our public transportation system, and I’m grateful to the Biden-Harris Department of Transportation for prioritizing these important upgrades to their facilities.”
“NJ TRANSIT is pleased to have supported NY Waterway in securing this federal funding, which will enhance the safety and reliability of ferry services at Weehawken,” said NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kevin S. Corbett. “Ferries are an integral part of our state's transportation network, providing critical connectivity and mobility every day for thousands of New Jerseyans.”
“The funding and construction of the wave attenuation screen is an essential step in ensuring the safety and modernization of our ferry maintenance facility,” said Armand Pohan, Chairman, President and CEO of NY Waterway. “This structure serves the needs of the ferry system and the thousands of riders we serve, as well as the need for resiliency protection of property along the neighboring Weehawken shoreline. We are grateful to our state and federal partners for recognizing the importance of this project through their support, and for the leadership of Representative Menendez, as well as Senator Cory Booker and the office of the late Representative Donald M. Payne, Jr., in helping to secure this critical funding.”
Congressman Menendez proudly serves on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, where he advocates for funding to improve the reliability of transit infrastructure, build resiliency against extreme weather, and ensure that New Jersey communities have equitable access to the transportation system.
