Congressman Rob Menendez Responds to House Homeland Security Committee Chair Green’s Retirement Announcement
WASHINGTON, D.C - Following House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green's (R-TN-07) retirement announcement, Congressman Rob Menendez released the following statement.
"Chairman Green’s statement that our country and Congress are “broken beyond most means of repair” is a testament to the absolute failure of this GOP majority and their ability to lead.
"That failure includes Chairman Green’s stewardship of the Committee on Homeland Security, which has been used for the entirety of the 118th Congress as a vehicle to score political points against the Biden Administration including the unconstitutional and baseless impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas. We have had zero full committee hearings on emergency preparedness, cybersecurity, and other significant issues under the committee’s jurisdiction.
"Further, to say “our fight is with Washington” is reckless and dangerous rhetoric when you consider the actions of January 6th, which Republicans not only refuse to acknowledge but also refer to participants on that infamous day as “political hostages”. This is why Republicans refused to include “Domestic Terrorism” in our committee’s oversight charter, because there is a direct line from January 6th to former President Trump to House Republicans.
"Despite the dysfunction caused by the Majority, this institution is worth fighting for. And this country is most certainly worth fighting for.
"And after having the opportunity to deliver for Americans and failing to do so, Republicans are choosing to flee. I say good riddance. Leave this institution and its committees to those who want to stay and fight for the country that has given us all so much. I know Democrats stand ready to deliver."
