Statement by Congressman Rob Menendez on Motion to Vacate Vote

October 3, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After voting in favor of a motion to vacate the Speakership of the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Rob Menendez released the following statement:

“I came to Congress to work on legislative priorities that would benefit families across the country and, specifically, in New Jersey’s 8th Congressional District. Yet, from day one and after 15 rounds of votes for Speaker, Republicans have not only shown they are incapable of governing but Speaker McCarthy has shown his word cannot be trusted. Nor has he demonstrated any willingness to work across the aisle on solutions that will help Americans whether they are from red or blue districts. For those reasons and so many more, I voted in favor of the motion to vacate.

“Last Congress, Speaker Pelosi worked in a bipartisan manner to deliver wins for the American people, including the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the PACT Act, and the CHIPS and Science Act. This Congress, Speaker McCarthy has consistently pursued a partisan and unproductive agenda at the direction of the most radical voices in the House GOP, while also failing to live up to his deal with President Biden to fund our government at agreed-upon levels.

“The American people deserve a Speaker who will put their interests above those of the most divisive voices in Congress, and that is what I will always support and advocate for.”
